San Juan County regulations “unfriendly” towards local farmer

Charles Dalton just wants to grow blueberries on his small organic, no-till farm. He built a barn without a permit, and the “Friends” of San Juan County turned him in. Now, San Juan County is treating Charles like a criminal. Instead of helping him through the process, San Juan County is throwing the book at him and piling on the requirements.

There seems to be no end in sight. Watch this video and decide for yourself if San Juan County is working for the citizens of San Juan County, or if they are unduly influenced by the Department of Ecology and powerful special interest groups like the “friends”.

Scott,

I really feel for this guy. Charles seems like a fairly smart guy who looks like he can build a heck of a barn. I’ve seen many barns across our grand country and his is probably a medium sized barn.

What baffles me about these stories you continually run about people taking on architectural endeavors is that they never consult an architect. The troubles Charles ran into is exactly the kinds of things an architect can help people avoid. Had Charles done due diligence with an architect prior to constructing it would be more likely that the trouble with D. of Ecology could have been figured out and resolved prior to construction and prior to “friends of SJ” seeing his structure (I’m sure “friends of SJ” are just as annoying to Ecology as much as they are to Charles - squeaky wheels usually are).

Thank you for the site panning with your filming. It really adds context. Now, I admit, I am no licensed ecologist but if “a few ditches” (looking no bigger than a shovel’s head) draining that big flat area can keep that pond full of water for irrigation I suspect that soil is pretty saturated. I might go as far as say your “expert” witness might have more of an axe to grind with Ecology (listen to the way he chooses to single individuals out) than he actually is willing to recognize the truth of a situation. Not that I deny the “expert” his credit, I’m just saying he might have other motives than helping out Charles.

Scott,

I thought you all at EFF were against licensing in all forms?

yet your expert uses licensing as some kind of form of validation of knowledge.

I would suggest to Charles to check into who really wnats his property! Seems to me there is someone who is interested and that is why he is having so much problems although he should of gotten an permit first
